Deep Thoughts

  • Please do not sign up unless you know an eagerness to work is deeply entrenched in your soul. If you are doing this for the perks vs the desire to make the event better, YOU ARE NOT THE CORRECT PERSON.

  • If you, have attitude, evade work, not energetically helpful or miss shifts, you will not receive the perks and be banned from volunteering in the future.

  • Any volunteer caught steeling will be banned for life from all Vortex and partner events and generally be pointed at and looked down upon as a bad human anywhere you go. Sadly we have had issues :( 

Selection process.

  • All positions are high accountability and responsibility and need firm commitment

  • We encourage all to sign up for positions at the links above

  • We will contact everybody who signs up in March 2020

  • At this point, you will submit an application and statement of commitment.

  • We will choose from these to fill the required slots. Not everybody can be selected :( 

  • If you do not get the slot you were looking for, we will still consider you for other slots if interested and it is a good fit


1) Event Setup and Tear Down

Number of Applicants selected: 7


  • Monday 6:00am to 11:00am

  • Saturday 4:00pm to 7:45pm


  • Help set up and tear down the event

  • Be ready to do labor, heavy lifting, construction and more

2) Registration 

Number of Applicants selected: 10


  • Monday 10:00am to 2:00pm

  • 11:00am to 2:00pm one other day (your day will be TBD)


  • Help with registration

3) Grounds Keepers 

Number of Applicants selected: 3


  • Mon, Tues, Wed, Thr, Fri, Sat - 7:00pm to 8:15pm

  • Meet at the beer garden booth at 7:00pm


  • Trash from beer garden

  • Assist servers in beer garden close down

  • Pick up trash from grounds

  • Put away PA and other items to event trailer

4) Pre Race Day Check in

Number of Applicants selected: 7


  • Day before the race - Wed or Thr or Fri 3:00pm to 7:00pm


  • Help with bib assignment and race check in

5) Beer Garden 

Number of Applicants selected: 9


  • 2 days (TBD)  from 3:30pm to 7:45pm


  • Beer Ticket Sales

  • Other product sales at the beer garden

  • Fill water

  • Ice or kegs runs

  • Idea is with 3 people, you can rotate out responsible vs social. This is a fun position.

6) Race Day Assistance (Cannot Be Racing) Friends and family

Number of Applicants selected: 5


  • Race Day Only from 8:00am till after awards 5:00pm ish - YES, long day


  • since you are not racing or may not be an event participant. We will pay you $100 vs race discount and early entry


  • This is wide open position. You will be helping out the crew race day with various task.  

  • Race AM check in

  • Loading Shuttle

  • Assist with spotting

  • Grabbing food for announcers

  • Helping carry boats

  • Grabbing an event camera and doing photos

  • Mega phone at take out

  • All and anything else

  • CLUTCH position - great position for friends and family who are attending but not racing


**** MANAGER ****

Number of Applicant selected: 6


  • Every day 8am to 8pm

  • You will be assigned a partner. 

    • you and your partner are both on call 8:00am to 11:00am​

    • From 11:00am to 5:00pm only one of you on call. IE take turns having fun

    • you and your partner are both on call again 5:00pm till 8:00pm


  • You will stay for free at the Vortex. Possibly shared quarters or Glamping tents or Van spot.

  • All the Volunteer Perks

  • Free Race Entry - you can still race, but will work before and after the race

  • NOTE: Do not select this if you have social obligation outside of the event staff. We are a fun group though. You will have instant family 

  • NOTE: While we encourage everybody who is interested in the behind the scene experience to sign up, Please only do so if your heart and soul is truly into the experience of it.  Only sign up if you are the kind of person who looks for things to do vs told what to do. This is an Leadership position and we expect leaders.

  • This is a working position. Not a field trip


  • While general on call, the sky is the limit

  • You will be assigned one of the above roles to manage
